Expanded form

In G3, you need to know about WRITTEN, STANDARD (numeric) and EXPANDED FORM. This is to help you learn all about place value.

Just to remind you: –

  • Standard – 52, 467
  • Written – fifty-two thousand, four hundred sixty-seven

In this lesson we are going to look at EXPANDED FORM.

Here is how this number would look like written in expanded form

50,000 + 2,000 + 400 + 60 + 7

This is how we work it out!                                   sock_puppet_nodding_yes_sx

First of all ask yourself this question…what is ZERO? What does it mean? Why do we need it?

Now ask yourself this question….do you know your place value order?Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 8.06.28 AM

In G3 we will learn up to 10Th place value. It doesn’t mean   sock_puppet_nodding_yes_sx                        you shouldn’t know what the rest are though! 😉

Let’s explore this a little further with some hands-on work. You will need this grid to help you.

   Expanded form grid

Once we have made the numbers in your grid, see if you can make up two or three more of your own using the empty grid.

NOW…. are you ready for the challenge?!
