A myth is a fantasy story that explains the relationship between gods and humans, or why something is the way it is. It could include fairies, unicorns, mermaids, etc. because it is a fantasy. A myth is a story that is not true and sends you a message.

A myth was used to try to explain something that is very hard to explain in very simple ways.

Some ancient explanations.

The Ancient Romans believed that volcanoes happened because of Vulcan, the smith that made weapons for their gods. They thought that he used the the ground under Mount Etna in Sicily as his forge. Sometimes the fire would spill out of the center of the Earth because of his hammering.

The Ancient Japanese believed that Volcanoes happened because of the giant catfish called Namazu would make earthquakes by shaking his huge body, which would set off the volcanoes.

The Ancient Greeks had a more scientific approach to explaining why volcanoes erupted. They believed that there were underground fires and that would sometimes explode through to the top of the earth’s crust.
